I have been going through the same thought process, though not motivated by a particular employment. I was more generally looking for something that was as far away from Java as I could find, I do like your categories of languages approach however.

http://simergence.blogspot.com/2009/05/learning...

Interesting. I struggled for a very long time with finding the right language/skills to learn and I have come to the conclusion that languages only get in your way (if that makes sense). What we need to master are the concepts behind them, so I do not stress too much about which language to learn next.

I am an independent developer so I get to choose which languages to use and I do not have the pressure of learning x or y language just to keep my job or find a new one. As a result, I do not really care about a 'language' by itself. I care about programming and computing in the more general sense.

I know Ruby, Python and JavaScript reasonably well although I cannot call myself an expert and probably never will. I occasionally use PHP, ActionScript and C but they are not really my cup of tea.

I am currently learning Clojure and Objective-C but again, it's not that I particularly care about the languages themselves. What I'm interested in is what
I can learn through them.

To me, Clojure is a gem of a language and I have a lot to learn from it: Lisp, FP, the JVM, Java libraries and in general, the Java ecosystem (without touching the Java language itself, which is a big win for me).

Ultimately, the only way to be an exceptional programmer and to master a language, any language, is to understand how it's implemented. Understanding compilers and/or interpreters is the way to true mastery, in my opinion.
